Eggs are truly egg-cellent and this week I had the pleasure of hosting Conestoga Farms Egg-Cellent Hacks Virtual Event. We all know that these protein-packed goodies can be used so many different ways but what you may not know is what Conestoga Farms brings to the table?

Conestoga Farms (which is located in Southern Ontario), have a variety of products with different benefits to choose from. The biggest factors for me when choosing any food products are nutritional value and sustainability. Buying items that are local and versatile, like Conestoga’s 6-pack carton of Organic Eggs instead of having to commit to a full dozen or being able to buy perfectly cooked and already peeled hard-boiled eggs is very important to me and just makes my life easier. Working with Conestoga Farms for this event brought me closer to knowing where my food comes from and a little more about the farmers that produce them. That being said, here are 5 ways to hack an egg.

1. How To Tell If Your Eggs Are Fresh

The Float Test – Place an egg in a bowl full of cold water. If they sink or lay flat on their side they’re still fresh. If they stand up on one end at the bottom of the bowl, they may be a few weeks old. If they float to the surface, they’re no longer fresh enough to eat.

2. How To Separate Egg Whites & Yolks

The Waterbottle Trick – Crack an egg into a bowl, squeeze an empty plastic water bottle slightly, and place the bottle opening over the yolk. When you release your grip, the yolk is sucked inside, separating itself from the white. Squeeze the yolk into another bowl.

3. How To Make Eggs Room Temperature Quickly

When your recipe calls for room temperature eggs, place the eggs in a bowl of hot water. This is key for baking with some batters because cold eggs re-hardens the melted liquid fats. Try it when you make pancakes next time.

4. How To Make The Perfect Poached Egg

Ever get those stringy swirls of egg whites while poaching your eggs? Strain each cracked egg over a fine-mesh sieve to remove any additional watery part of the egg whites that occurs when eggs are not super fresh. Then transfer the egg into a small  ramekin and gently drop the egg into barely simmering water.

5. How To Get The Perfect Hard Boiled Egg

Frustrated peeling hard boiled eggs? Wondering why those brown rings form around the yolks. Now you can buy them already boiled to perfection and peeled! Conestoga Farms offers Free Run Hard Boiled and Peeled Eggs guaranteed to have no rings around those beautiful bright yolks.
