Berry Rules: How to keep your berries & cherries fresh

fresh berries

Treat your berries and cherries kindly. They are not cheap and they can be a wee bit fussy. This is how you can keep your berries and cherries fresh for longer.

Rule #1:

Wash as needed! Moisture is the enemy when it comes to storing berries and cherries in your fridge. If you wash them and do not dry them completely before storing them, they will go moldy and soft.

Rule #2:

Before storing, inspect and remove any mushy moldy fruit, since the spores
will spread and mold your precious berries.

Rule #3:

Give them some space for goodness sakes! Transfer your tender loving
berries into a roomier container with a small clean tea towel lining the bottom to absorb any unwanted moisture. This is because berries and cherries like to breathe, so place the lid loosely on top.

Zero Waste Tip:

If you like to wash your berries as soon as you get home for easier snacking, you CAN soak your berries is a simple 1 part vinegar to 3 parts cold water for a minute or two. However, drain and DRY them very well by laying them out on clean tea towels for at least 30 minutes before storing using Rule #3. This vinegar-water solution can also extend the like of your berries in the fridge.
